Hoop dreams
Tony Rodriguez is the president and Raul Chappa is the vice president at Metro City Construction.
“After working together at a different company, Raul and I started the business almost eight years ago with about $30,000,” Rodriguez said. “Now, we have 40 or 50 pieces of equipment. In about one more year we will be debt free.
“For the first few years, we had steady growth. It was kind of surreal in the beginning.”
Rodriguez says his father and Chappa’s father worked in construction, so they both grew up in the industry.
“I earned a business degree from the University of Houston and I have an accounting and finance background,” he said. “I wanted to handle the administrative duties at the company. Raul is on the operations side and works in the field, so we make a good team.”
Metro City Construction has an annual Christmas party for key supervisors. This year the company party will include a deejay, dancing and Italian food at a hotel.
Rodriguez says Chappa’s hobbies are watching NASCAR races and hunting.
“I coach a kid’s basketball team,” Rodriguez said. “I get off from work about 2pm and head to the gym to get ready for the games. We have won a few games but we are a long way from getting to where we need to be.
“I also coach a select club basketball team and we travel to places across the nation. Hopefully, when I retire, I can coach basketball full time.”
