Great to excavate
HOUSTON - Learning about concrete cutting and breaking for years, Calvin Smith went out on his own to start CSCM Excavating in 1995.
“I grew up on a farm in Mason City, IA and remember always running machinery,” Smith said. “I moved to the Houston area in the late ‘70s.”
Smith’s son Josh helps out on the side after his full-time job at another local sawing and breaking company.
“Josh began going to jobsites with me when he was about 14,” Smith said. “He operated the Bobcat equipment and loaded trucks.
“Riding and racing motorcycles is Josh’s hobby lately. A few years ago, he and his buddies built a motocross track on our property by compiling extra dirt that we had at the time.”
Smith says his company is based in Tomball but he travels all around depending on the project.
“What I love about the construction industry is you are doing one thing today and a different thing tomorrow. You are continually moving on to something else and meeting new people.
“Through the years, I have noticed the equipment has improved in the excavating business. I think the equipment is more user friendly and easier to operate nowadays.”
Kris, Smith’s wife, handles the bookkeeping, paperwork and other office duties. The couple has been married for 25 years.
“After work, I have been clearing a spot on our land for my wife to plant a big vegetable garden this spring,” he said. “I also feed our horses, goats and a longhorn. My daughter Tarah used to be big into the Future Farmers of America and that took up a lot of time on the weekends. Tarah is now in college studying to be a veterinarian.”
Smith says his family travels back to Iowa to visit relatives every Fourth of July. He says he stays behind to run the company.
“I will take a trip back to my hometown every few years or so,” he said. “I have to stay here and keep working since we are busy in the summer months!”
CSCM Excavating provides excavating services for contractors, electricians and plumbers. –ab
