Moving onward
GALVESTON - The Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) moved a tiny Ike-damaged house down the street to a new lot Feb. 18.
“This kicked off a project that will turn the 19th-century cottage into a public energy efficient showhouse using green building design,” said Molly Dannemaier, director of marketing at the GHF.
Dannemaier says the 1,000-sf house is being moved 17 blocks, from the 2100 block of Avenue M 1/2 to the corner of 31st Street and Avenue Q.
“It’s often been said now that the ‘greenest’ building is one that has already been built.” said Dwayne Jones, GHF executive director. ““The demand is growing for energy efficiency and sustainability in all buildings, and GHF wants to show people how true historic preservation and energy efficiency can be achieved at the same time.”
“This house will be loaded with green elements, including some wind energy and solar power,” said Matthew Pelz, a project coordinator with GHF.
GHF’s goals are to preserve or reuse over 90 percent of existing materials in the model house, he said. –ab
