HOUSTON – President Mike Schoeneman, Atlas Universal Inc., is a second-generation roofer.
“My father O.E. (Tex) bought the business and is now retired,” Schoeneman said. “Now I am running the company.
“I have been employed here for about 40 years. One of my very first jobs was working on the roofs. We used to be located on the east side of downtown and we have operated on W. Tidwell for about six years.”
On the side, Schoeneman goes hunting and fishing in Mexico and South Texas.
“Our vice president Justin Price played football at University of A & I down in the valley,” he said. “Justin played the linebacker position and his team won the regional championship.”
The project managers are Matt Buckholtz and Francisco Rubacava. “Francisco is also estimating for us,” Schoeneman said. “He and I work together on a lot of school and municipal jobs in Houston.”
Every year the company has a Christmas party and employees also celebrate birthdays throughout the year.
“When an employee has a birthday, we will bring in a cake to make his or her day special,” he said.
According to Schoeneman, since he began in the industry, he has noticed the roofing systems have changed.
“There is more technical information involved in installing roofs nowadays,” he said. “There are wind uplift standards that you have to meet because of hurricanes.”
Atlas Universal provides commercial roofing, sheet metal and waterproofing. –ab
