RIO MEDINA, TX – Before the bulls buck their way out of the chutes at Cowboy’s Dancehall in San Antonio, the dirt has to be just right. That’s the job of Brown Excavation & Utilities, LLC, Rio Medina, TX.

Of course besides maintaining the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) projects, Brown Excavation does a little construction work as well.  The 1-year-old company handles utility work for large construction projects, including schools and military jobs.

Co-owner Robert Brown started the utility division at Mesa Equipment seven years ago.  When he decided to branch out on his own, he and wife, Bridgett, formed Brown Excavation & Utilities, with Bridgett as majority owner.

“This is just something we have always wanted to do,” Robert said.  “So far it has been successful.  I think we have gotten through the rut and made it through starting a company in that kind of economy.  We pulled through and we are on top of things.”

Brown Excavation has 14 employees and runs two to three crews.  Bridgett handles all the office and human resources work.

The couple also stays busy with their two children, 10-year-old daughter, Raygan, and 6-year-old son, Blaze.  But there is still time for fishing.

“I used to be an avid tournament fisher with Bass Champs, but we have kind of slowed down on that,” Robert said.  He said that Bridgett is not as keen on bass fishing as she is on saltwater fishing. Some of Bridgett’s best catches include a 41-in. redfish and a 25-lb. Jack Crevalle.

Robert and Bridgett participate now in construction industry fishing tournaments and clay shoots.

In the future the Browns would like to raise some bucking bulls of their own.  “We are actually looking to buy 30 acres in Hondo right now,” Robert said.
