Recycle, reuse, reclaimed!
AUSTIN, Tx. – Owner of DIRTCO, Tracen Gardner, is putting his environmental resource management degree from the University of Texas and his experience in construction to use with a fairly new company called Reclaimed Space. His partner in the company is Kimber Reed.
Reclaimed Space recently won an award from the Environmental Protection Agency.
“We are known for building beyond green,” Gardner said. “We save landfill space and use low energy requirements.”
With Reed on the design end and Gardner on the construction side, the two find houses that are 150 years old to tear down and rebuild into functional buildings such as a bed & breakfast, a house or a remote office. The buildings are insulated to code and transportable. Gardner and Kimber are renting space from Callahan’s General Store next to the store to house both DIRTCO and Reclaimed Space.
Gardner has an interest in nature outside of his work as well. One example of this is a project he worked on at the old west Austin parks to build natural retaining walls and make the park more dog and user friendly. He also enjoys being outdoors and spending time with his 3-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter.
Most of the time, he stays busy these days with his two businesses.
“It is a way to get ahead. In these tough times, every little bit helps,” he said.
Reclaimed Space is a company that specializes in reusing old materials and buildings to create a new, functional, transportable building. DIRTCO specializes in landscapes and hardscapes. –km
