AUSTIN – With the recent delivery of the LIVESTRONG Cancer Navigation Center at the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the evolution of the 1950s-era Gulf Coast Paper Co. warehouse in East Austin that started with an extensive renovation of the building is now complete.

Architecture, interior design and construction for the 28,000-sf LEED Gold certified building were provided by Lake/Flato, The Bommarito Group and SpawMaxwell, a Division of Balfour Beatty Construction.

The architecture and interior design of the recently completed Cancer Navigation Center, a 5,570-sf prototype for future centers that is part of the foundation’s headquarters in East Austin, was provided by STG Design with SpawMaxwell as general contractor.

“The navigation center serves as a central hub for financial, medical and personal guidance to individuals who have cancer,” said Greg Lee, Chief Financial Officer for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Design architect Jeff Ervin at STG Design says the navigation center incorporates a large gathering area and a library. The space utilizes a “walls on wheels” feature allowing for flexible room configurations, Ervin added.

Chris Savasky, the Lance Armstrong Foundation project manager for SpawMaxwell, described the creative means and methods utilized to effectively reuse many of the building’s materials during the primary renovation.

“Concrete from a portion of the tilt wall removed from the front of the building was resized and reused as exterior features – curbs, sidewalk, parking stripes, landscape elements, screens, and bench seating; concrete was also reused from the trenches cut into the floor that replaced overhead conduit for electrical, data and cable,” he said.

“In addition, individual boards from the roof deck underwent extensive reconditioning - nail and paint removal; boards were planed on all four sides, and cut to size for reuse as part of the cluster of interior “cube” conference rooms.”

The main building was recently named a Top Ten Green Project by the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment (COTE).

“The COTE Award represents the 11th award we have won, and the most prestigious honor yet,” Lee added.

SpawMaxwell is a provider of interior construction for commercial and healthcare clients in Texas. They are part of the Balfour Beatty family of companies with expertise in construction of facilities for corporate office, healthcare, hospitality, education, mission critical, government and turnkey delivery of public private partnerships.  –ab
