Fish for all
SAN ANTONIO – Sportsmen packed the new Exposition Hall B. at the Freeman Coliseum grounds Apr. 15 to support the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) San Antonio Chapter at the 31st Annual Banquet.
“As always the construction industry is a big piece of what makes up the CCA San Antonio – donors, table buyers and sponsors – and they continue to be strong supporters of CCA and all of the efforts that the CCA endorses,” said Johnny Rayburg, banquet chairman.
Rayburg said donors for the live auction and door raffles came through like never before for the event.
“New donors, new sponsors have come in and it looks like it is going to be a fantastic year for CCA, despite the economic outlook and the outside world, we are doing great.”
Auction items included hunting and fishing trips all over the world. Among the 58 auction items were peacock bass fishing in the Amazon; salmon fishing in British Columbia; dove hunting in Argentina; safari in South Africa; and red stag hunting in New Zealand.
The new venue for the banquet was a plus, according to Rayburg. “This is now twice the square footage on the floor space that we had inside the coliseum. We have taken up every ounce of that space, spread out, given everybody a little more elbowroom, and I think everybody is going to love it.”
In addition to the live auction, silent auction and raffles, one of the main draws of the banquet is the open buffet, which features seafood, beef tenderloin, duck and all the trimmings.
According to Rayburg, the San Antonio CCA Chapter is one of the largest revenue-producing CCA banquets in the United States.
“Our goals are always to raise as much money as possible for CCA. All the money raised in Texas stays in Texas. It supports the big projects we have going on here.”
CCA Texas began in 1977 as the Gulf Coast Conservation Association by a small group of anglers concerned about the results of commercial over-fishing along the Texas Gulf Coast. Money raised by CCA goes toward conservation programs for fisheries, bays and estuaries, as well as scholarship programs. –bd/kf
