Ancient architecture
ABU SIMBEL, EGYPT – Marvin Hecker, Jancom Technologies, was able to fulfill his dream to explore what he calls the most fascinating architecture on his recent trip to Egypt with his wife, Gaylon Finklea Hecker, and daughter, Yael Young. His wife had wanted to travel to Egypt since she was a teenager.
“It was the trip of a lifetime,” Hecker said. “It is one of those places where civilization began.”
The trip included being passengers on a ship down the Nile River, a hot air balloon ride, exploring pyramids and visiting the Library of Alexandria. Although they were in awe of everything they came across on their two-week journey, the Egyptian history and culture was not new to them. The three had been studying Egypt in depth prior to their trip. This included viewing 48, 20-minute video lectures on the entire history of Egypt and reading about the country.
“One piece of advice I have for anyone going to a place of this magnitude is to do some studying before the trip so you can appreciate what you are looking at,” Hecker said.
Another piece of advice he has for other tourists is to make the experience as personal as possible.
“We chose to have a personal tour guide and driver,” he said.
As a construction professional, he had a special appreciation for places such as the Library of Alexandria and the temple complex called Karnak.
“Anybody involved in the construction process would be fascinated with what they were able to do,” he said.
Hecker would recommend this trip to anyone.
“It is like going to Jerusalem. It’s one of those places you should go because it is one of the origins of civilization.” –km
